Drivetrains

Precedent: 48V DC electric (IQ, then Excel) or gas — the FE350 early, the Subaru-sourced ECH440 EFI later. The simplest, most aftermarket-supported drivetrain family of the three.
Tempo: fleet-spec 48V electric with ERIC charging (the smart onboard-charger era), plus lithium fleet options. Mechanically close to a late Precedent underneath.
Onward: the full menu — 48V ERIC electric, EX-40/ECH440 gas, and the Onward HP line with AC drive and factory lithium. The HP is a different electrical animal from the DC carts: AC motor, lithium pack, its own controller family.

Charging: OBC vs ERIC

Classic Precedents use the OBC (onboard computer) charging system — the one behind the famous "Club Car won't charge" complaint. Tempo and Onward moved to ERIC (Club Car's smart charger integration). Practical upshot: chargers don't cross between the eras, and lithium conversions on OBC carts include a bypass while ERIC-era carts follow their own kit instructions.

Honest guidance from the parts counter: a clean Precedent is the value play — massive used supply from fleet turnover, the deepest aftermarket in the industry, and a lithium conversion turns a $3K fleet pull into a modern cart. A Tempo off-lease is essentially a newer Precedent with updated charging — great bones, fewer personalization parts on the market so far. The Onward costs more used because it was built as the retail cart — buy it when you want the factory 4-seat layout, the styling, or the HP lithium drivetrain from day one rather than as a project.
