The DS is the most-modified golf cart in history for a reason: millions built, dirt-cheap used, and a chassis that takes upgrades like it was designed for them. But "how do I make my DS faster" has three completely different answers depending on what's under the seat — a V-Glide, a PowerDrive, or an IQ system. Start by knowing which cart you own; then read your section.

IQ DS (2001–2008, 48V) — the easy one

An IQ DS shares its electrical architecture with the Precedent, which means it inherits the healthiest upgrade catalog in the sport:

  1. Taller tires: ~2 mph at 20", ~4 mph at 22" (lift kit territory past 20"). The universal first step.
  2. High-speed motor on the stock controller: the headline option. Speed-wound, torque-wound, and balanced aftermarket motors drop into the IQ system and put a healthy DS into the low-to-mid 20s without touching the controller. Match the wind to your terrain — speed for flat pavement, torque for hills and hauling, balanced for most.
  3. Controller upgrade: higher amperage for acceleration and hills; pairs naturally with a torque motor on working carts.
  4. Lithium: kills the voltage sag that makes an old pack feel slower every hour, drops 250+ lbs, and includes the OBC bypass a DS conversion requires anyway. The best money on any DS with tired batteries — details in the Club Car charging guide.
  5. AC conversion kit: the ceiling — matched motor + controller, mid-20s+, regen, programmable. Price it against a motor swap honestly; many carts hit their target one rung earlier.

PowerDrive DS (1995–2000, 48V) — one honest fork in the road

Tires, motors, controllers, and lithium all apply here too — with one strategic question first: how much are you investing in a PowerDrive-era control system? Modest goals (a few mph, better hills): a motor and fresh rolling stock get you there without opening the fork. Bigger ambitions: it often makes more sense to jump straight to an AC conversion or a modern controller-and-motor pairing than to build piecemeal on 25-year-old electronics — and if the batteries are due, the lithium conversion (OBC bypass included) is the foundation to lay first. V-Glide DS (36V, through 1994) — the project cart

The honest answer for the 36V carts: the wiper-board system was engineered for golf-course pace, and pushing it hard mostly finds its limits. Your real options:

  • Keep it 36V and freshen it: new batteries, cables, and a healthy motor restore what it had — reliable, charming, and fine for the neighborhood loop. Tires still add their 2–4 mph.
  • The 48V system conversion: the transformative path — controller, solenoid, charger, motor, and batteries move together to modern 48V spec, at which point the whole IQ-style upgrade catalog opens up. It's the biggest project on this page and the one that turns a $1,500 barn find into a modern cart. Serial number first; we'll spec the complete package rather than sell it in confusing pieces.

The gearing footnote: the DS transaxle has aftermarket gear options that trade torque for top end. They're real, they work, and they're also the most invasive job on this page — on most builds, tires + motor reach the same number with hand tools. Ask us before going in the case.

Every generation: the supporting cast

Whatever the drivetrain, a 20–30-year-old cart being asked to go faster deserves: fresh battery cables (voltage drop through corroded cables mimics a weak motor), a brake refresh (shoes, cables, hardware — cheap insurance engineered into every speed build), and honest suspension — worn bushings at 24 mph feel very different than at 15.

Speed and the law: 20–25 mph on public roads generally puts you in LSV territory — lighting, mirrors, registration. And stock DS drum brakes were designed for golf-course speeds; the brake refresh isn't optional equipment on a fast build.
