Making a Cart Faster
A stock golf cart tops out somewhere around 12–15 mph — fine for the course, frustrating everywhere else. The good news is that a few well-chosen upgrades can meaningfully raise your top speed. The important news is that going faster changes how your cart brakes, corners, and holds together, so the smart approach is to upgrade the whole system, not just the one part that makes the speedometer climb. Here's how each upgrade works, roughly what it does, and what else you should upgrade alongside it.
1. Bigger tires — the easiest speed gain
Larger-diameter tires are the simplest way to add a few miles per hour. A taller tire covers more ground per rotation, so at the same motor speed your cart travels farther — effectively changing your "final gear ratio." Going from stock 18" tires to 22–23" tires can add roughly 2–4 mph to your top end.
The trade-off: you gain top speed but lose low-end torque and hill-climbing power, because the motor now works harder to turn those bigger tires. On flat ground it's a great, cheap gain. If your area is hilly, big tires alone can leave the cart feeling sluggish from a stop. Bigger tires usually also require a lift kit to fit without rubbing.

2. A performance controller — the biggest single upgrade
The controller is the brain that regulates how much power flows from the batteries to the motor. Stock controllers are tuned conservatively. A higher-amperage performance controller (from brands like Navitas, Alltrax, or Curtis) raises the current ceiling, which increases both acceleration and top speed — and on many carts it's the single most effective speed upgrade you can make.
Many performance controllers also let you tune your cart — adjusting top speed, acceleration curve, and regen braking — sometimes on the fly with a handheld programmer or a phone app. That flexibility is a big part of the appeal.
What to upgrade alongside it: a more powerful controller pushes more current through your motor, solenoid, and wiring. On a well-worn cart, it's worth making sure those components are healthy so the extra load doesn't find the weakest link. Browse motors & controllers.
3. A high-speed motor — for a bigger jump
If a controller alone isn't enough, the motor itself is the next step. Motors are broadly built for either torque (strong low-end pull and hill climbing) or speed (higher top end). A high-speed motor raises your ceiling, while a high-torque motor gets you there faster and climbs better — you choose based on your terrain and goals.

4. More voltage — the biggest performance ceiling
Electric motor performance scales with voltage. Some owners increase their system voltage (for example, moving from a 36V or 48V system toward higher-voltage setups) for a substantial performance jump. This is the most involved route — it typically means changing batteries, and the controller and motor have to be rated for the higher voltage. It's a whole-system change, not a bolt-on, but it delivers the biggest gains.

Lithium packs are lighter than lead-acid (less weight for the motor to move) and hold their voltage more consistently through the charge, so the cart doesn't sag and slow as the batteries drain the way lead-acid does. Don't forget what stops and steers the cart
This is the part enthusiast guides love to skip, and it's the most important. A cart that goes faster also needs to stop and handle at that higher speed:
- Brakes. More speed means longer stopping distances. Make sure your brakes are in good condition and consider an upgrade if you've substantially raised your top end.
- Steering and suspension. A lifted cart on big tires has a higher center of gravity and behaves differently in a turn. Quality steering and suspension components keep it stable.
- Tires rated for the speed. Make sure your tires are appropriate for how fast you're now going, not just how they look.
Upgrading speed without upgrading control is how a fun project becomes an unsafe one. Treat the cart as a system.
A quick word on limits
Before you chase maximum speed, remember that how fast your cart is allowed to go on public roads is governed by its classification. Pushing past about 25 mph can move a cart out of the Low-Speed Vehicle category and into stricter territory.
