Club Car Precedent Won't Move? MCOR Symptoms, Test & Fix
Applies to the 48V electric Club Car Precedent (2004–present, serial prefixes PQ, PH, JE, JH) and to IQ-system DS carts (2001–2008, prefix AQ). Not sure which Club Car you have? Start with the serial number decoder.
When a Precedent won't move, one part is guilty more often than everything else combined: the MCOR — Motor Controller Output Regulator. It's the throttle sensor on the pedal linkage that tells the controller how fast you want to go, it lives low on the cart where vibration and moisture find it, and it wears out. But "usually the MCOR" isn't "always the MCOR," and MCORs get replaced every day on carts whose real problem was a $30 solenoid or a corroded battery cable. This guide gets you to the right answer with a multimeter and twenty minutes.
Before you start: key off, Tow/Run switch to TOW before touching any battery connection, no jewelry, no tools laid across terminals — a 48V pack will weld a wrench. Jack stands if the wheels leave the ground.
First, the 30-second checks
- Tow/Run switch in RUN. It's under the seat. In TOW the controller is disconnected on purpose.
- Charger unplugged. Charging locks out the drivetrain.
- Forward/Reverse fully engaged. Halfway is neutral. Cycle it firmly.
- Was it just charged or just towed? Flipping Tow→Run and back, then keying off and on, clears a surprising number of "dead" Precedents.

Before generic testing, match your cart's behavior to this table. The Precedent's failure modes are unusually distinctive:

The diagnostic sequence
1. Batteries — always first
Rested pack across main positive to main negative: a healthy 48V pack reads roughly 50–51V. Check each battery individually — one battery several volts below its siblings drags the pack down and mimics every electrical failure on this page. Clean and retorque every terminal while you're in there; corroded cables are the cheapest fix on this list and among the most common.
2. Listen for the solenoid
Key on, forward selected, press the pedal. Click = the control circuit works; skip to step 4. No click = step 3.
3. No click: trace the control circuit
With the meter, verify power through the key switch, then the F&R microswitch, then the MCOR's built-in limit switch (it closes at the top of pedal travel — no click ever means the solenoid isn't being told to fire), and finally check for voltage at the solenoid's small coil terminals with the pedal pressed. Voltage present but no click = dead solenoid coil. No voltage = the break is upstream in that chain.
4. Click but no movement: MCOR vs. solenoid contacts vs. controller
- Solenoid contacts: measure across the two large terminals while it clicks. Pack voltage across the big posts during the click = burned contacts — the coil works, the switch inside doesn't. Replace it.
- MCOR sweep test: back-probe the MCOR output and watch the voltage as you press the pedal slowly through its travel. You want one smooth, continuous rise. Jumps, dropouts, dead spots, or a signal that flickers when you wiggle the pedal = failed MCOR. This test is the difference between knowing and guessing.
- Speed sensor check: if the cart moves but only at a crawl, inspect the speed sensor connector at the motor before condemning anything else — unplugged or failed sensors are a five-minute fix that gets misdiagnosed as a dead controller constantly.
- Controller: last suspect, by elimination. If batteries, solenoid, MCOR signal, and speed sensor all verify good and the motor is silent, the controller is what remains.
