A lithium conversion is the single best thing you can do to a 48V DS. These carts have outlived two, three, four sets of lead-acid batteries; the chassis is bulletproof; and the moment 300+ pounds of lead leaves the tray, a 25-year-old cart drives like it just left the factory — better, actually, because lithium holds full voltage to the end of the charge. Here's the honest guide, by generation.
PowerDrive & IQ DS (1995–2008, 48V): the drop-in candidates
Both 48V generations convert directly, with the one Club Car requirement: the OBC bypass. The onboard computer that manages lead-acid charging doesn't speak lithium, so every kit includes bypassing it and handing charging intelligence to the included lithium charger. Two birds, one job — the bypass also permanently ends the OBC lockups behind the classic Club Car won't-charge complaint, which on a PowerDrive-era cart may be the best feature of the whole conversion.
Whether your pack is eight 6V batteries or another 48V configuration, the entire set comes out and one lithium battery goes in. DS tray dimensions and hold-downs varied across the production run — send your serial number and we confirm the kit's tray fit before shipping, same as we do on every conversion.
V-Glide DS (36V, through 1994): the two-step path
The straight answer: 36V lithium options are limited and the V-Glide's wiper speed control predates all of this. The path that actually works is the 48V system conversion first — controller, solenoid, charger, and motor move to modern 48V spec — after which the cart takes the same lithium kits as any IQ DS. It's the biggest project on this page and the one with the biggest payoff: a $1,500 barn-find V-Glide comes out the other side as a modern cart in the classic body. The install
Same afternoon-with-hand-tools job as any Club Car: TOW mode → out with the lead (the workout portion) → clean the tray → OBC bypass per kit instructions → set the battery → connections → gauge and charger → RUN → drive.
