EZGO TXT: Series vs PDS vs DCS — Which Do You Have?

Here's the problem EZGO built for its own owners: for over a decade, the TXT looked essentially identical outside while carrying three different drive systems underneath — Series, DCS, and PDS — and none of their electrical parts interchange. A controller for one is a paperweight in another; even the throttle input works on different principles. "It's a TXT" is the beginning of a parts conversation, never the end. This page identifies your system in five minutes with tests you can do in the driveway, no tools required for most of them.

The five-minute identification

Test 1 — Count the batteries

Add the voltages on the battery cases. 36V total = Series, DCS, or PDS (keep testing). 48V total = TXT48 — you're done, and your parts era is the modern one. On any used cart, the battery math outranks decals.

Test 2 — The reverse beeper

Key on, select reverse. A warning beep = DCS or PDS (the smart-controller systems). Silence = almost certainly Series.

Test 3 — The Run/Tow switch

Look under the seat for a labeled Run / Tow-Maintenance switch. PDS and DCS carts have it; Series carts generally don't. This switch is also your reset tool for life — cycling it clears more "dead cart" complaints than any part we sell.

Test 4 — Look at the motor terminals (settles DCS vs PDS vs Series)

Under the seat, at the motor: a series motor has four same-size terminals (A1, A2, S1, S2). A sepex motor — PDS and DCS — has two large armature terminals and two visibly smaller field terminals (F1, F2). If Tests 2–3 said "smart system," the label on the controller cover or resistor of the two eras usually reads DCS or PDS outright; when in doubt, the controller part number settles it and we can decode it from a photo.

Why the distinction is worth five minutes: controllers, throttle inputs, motors, and even some solenoids are system-specific. PDS carts use the ITS — an inductive throttle sensor in the pedal box — while Series carts use entirely different throttle hardware. Order by system, not by "TXT," and fitment problems disappear.

What your system means for parts and upgrades

Series

The simplest and most forgiving: series-wound torque, minimal electronics, everything serviceable. Upgrade paths run through higher-amp controllers and motor swaps — series motors love amperage. Its throttle is mechanical-era hardware; no ITS on these carts.

DCS

The transitional system: regen braking and smarter control, but a shorter production window means its specific electronics are the scarcest of the three. Working DCS carts are worth maintaining; a DCS cart with a dead controller is often the right candidate for a modern conversion rather than a hunt for period parts.

PDS

The most common 36V TXT on the road and the best-supported: controllers (including higher-torque aftermarket profiles), sepex motors in speed and torque winds, and the ITS sensor are all readily available.
