EZGO TXT Won't Move? Solenoid, ITS & Wiring Diagnosis
Applies to electric EZGO TXT models — 36V Series, DCS, and PDS, with TXT48 notes throughout. Diagnostics differ by drive system, so if you haven't identified yours, do the five-minute check first. RXV owners: your cart has a motor brake these don't — use the RXV won't-move guide instead.
A TXT that won't move is usually a cheap fix pretending to be an expensive one. The controller — the part everyone fears — is the last thing that fails on these carts; batteries, connections, the solenoid, and (on PDS) the throttle sensor cause the overwhelming majority of dead TXTs. Here's the sequence we run at the counter, in order of likelihood and cost.
Before you start: key off, Run/Tow switch to TOW (PDS/DCS) before touching battery connections, no jewelry, no tools laid across terminals. Jack stands if the wheels leave the ground.
The 60-second resets
- Cycle the Run/Tow switch (PDS/DCS): TOW, count ten, back to RUN, key cycled. This reboots the controller and clears more no-go complaints than any part we stock.
- Charger fully unplugged — charging locks out the drivetrain.
- F/R fully engaged — the TXT's lever wants a firm hand; halfway is neutral.
- Listen in reverse (PDS/DCS): if the reverse beeper sounds, the controller has power and the key/F&R path works — that one beep just cleared a third of the suspect list.
Step 1: batteries and cables — always
A rested 36V pack reads roughly 38V (TXT48: ~50–51V). Test every battery individually — one weak battery mimics every failure below. Then the connections: TXT battery racks live low and collect everything the tires throw; corroded terminals, green cable lugs, and rotten ground connections are the #1 root cause on carts more than a few years old. Wiggle-test every cable; replace the set if any lug crumbles or the insulation is heat-swollen.
Step 2: the solenoid click test
Key on, forward selected, pedal down. Click = skip to Step 4. No click, continue.
Step 3: no click — walk the control circuit

Step 4: clicks but won't move — the split by system
All systems: solenoid contacts first
Measure across the solenoid's two large terminals during the click. Pack voltage there = burned contacts; the coil works but the switch inside is done. Most-replaced part on the whole cart.
PDS: the ITS — EZGO's version of the classic throttle failure
The ITS (Inductive Throttle Sensor) in the pedal box tells the controller how fast to go, and when it drifts or dies you get the PDS signature set: no movement with a good solenoid, surging, a cart that takes off at full speed from a dead stop, or intermittent power over bumps. Back-probe its output and watch for one smooth voltage rise through the pedal travel — jumps, dead spots, or flicker on wiggle means the ITS is your part. It's a pedal-box job with hand tools, and it's the PDS repair we ship most.
Series: the throttle path, old-school
Series carts run mechanical-era throttle hardware — inspect the pedal linkage and its switch contacts for wear and adjustment before condemning electronics. The system is simple enough that a meter walks the whole path in ten minutes.
All systems: motor, then controller last
A humming motor that doesn't turn = check the hum against a possibly-seized brake cable or axle before blaming the motor; a silent motor with everything above verified good = brushes and connections (TXT motors are famously rebuildable). The controller is what remains when batteries, solenoid, throttle input, and motor all test clean — by elimination, never by guess. If it does come to that, controllers are speced by system, which is why the Series/DCS/PDS identification came first.
The pattern worth memorizing: sudden total death = connections, solenoid, or key path. Gradual weakening or intermittent behavior = batteries or ITS. Full-speed takeoffs or surging = ITS almost every time. Match the personality of the failure before spending a dollar.
