The RXV has a component no other golf cart brand uses, and it rewrites this entire diagnostic: an electromagnetic motor brake. Instead of a mechanical park brake pedal, the RXV's brake is a coil on the back of the motor that clamps automatically when the cart stops and releases electrically when you drive. Brilliant when it works — hill-hold, no rollaway, no forgotten park brake. And when it fails, it produces the RXV's two signature complaints: a cart that won't move and beeps at you, and a cart that won't roll even in tow. Owners replace solenoids, batteries, and throttles chasing what is, on an RXV, very often the brake.

Before you start: key off, and use the Tow/Maintenance switch (under the seat) before touching battery connections. An RXV with a released brake rolls freely — chock the wheels. No jewelry, no tools across terminals.

The 60-second checks

  1. Tow/Maintenance switch fully in RUN. Half-thrown is the classic self-inflicted RXV no-go.
  2. Charger unplugged — drivetrain lockout while connected.
  3. Seat and switch cycled: TOW, ten seconds, RUN, key cycled. Reboots the controller and clears fault latches.
  4. Pack voltage: a rested 48V pack reads roughly 50–51V. Weak packs make the RXV's electronics misbehave in creative ways — verify before diagnosing anything smart. (ELiTE carts: charge and retry before all else.)

The fork: does it roll in TOW?

Put the switch in TOW and push the cart. This one test splits the whole diagnosis:

Won't roll in TOW → the brake is stuck engaged

  • In TOW, the motor brake should release completely. A cart that won't push means the brake is mechanically stuck or its release isn't happening — this is the RXV signature failure.
  • The brake has a manual release at the brake unit on the back of the motor — releasing it by hand (per the label on the unit) confirms the brake is the culprit and gets the cart pushable for service.
  • Stuck brakes that free up once often stick again; a worn RXV motor brake is a bolt-on replacement at the motor's tail, and it's one of the most common repairs we ship for these carts.

Rolls fine in TOW, won't drive in RUN → electrical release or drive fault

  • Beeping when you press the pedal is the controller announcing a fault — very commonly that it can't confirm brake release. The brake coil, its wiring, and its connector at the motor are the first inspection: a broken wire or corroded pin between controller and brake coil produces exactly this.
  • Listen at the motor as a helper presses the pedal: a healthy brake gives a soft click as it releases. Silence at the brake plus beeping = coil or wiring. Click plus still no movement = the fault is elsewhere — keep going.
  • Pedal/throttle input: like every cart, the RXV needs a clean throttle signal; erratic or no response with a confirmed brake click points at the pedal assembly's sensor.
  • Main contactor and connections: verify the main power path — the RXV's precharge and contactor live with the controller, and low pack voltage or corroded main lugs will fault the system before it ever engages.

Beeps are the cart talking

RXV beep patterns are diagnostic codes, and they differ by controller era — which is the other thing every RXV owner must know: 2008–2011 carts run Danaher controllers, 2012-and-later run Curtis AC controllers, and ELiTE carts are their own 56V lithium family. The three eras' controllers, brake part numbers, and fault codes are not interchangeable, so the serial number rides along on every RXV parts order. The misdiagnosis we see weekly: an RXV that "needs a controller" because it beeps and won't move — when the brake coil wiring at the motor connector has simply corroded. Inspect the $0 connector before pricing the $700 controller. The reverse mistake happens too: a brake replaced twice because a weak battery pack keeps faulting the release. Pack first, brake circuit second, controller last.
