How to Make an EZGO TXT Faster: Motors, Amps & More

Applies to electric EZGO TXT models. Every path below splits by drive system — Series, PDS, or TXT48 — so identify yours first (five minutes, no tools). RXV owners have their own architecture; much of the logic transfers but the parts don't.

A stock TXT runs 12–15 mph most trims, and the platform's upgrade story is one of the best in golf carts: enormous aftermarket, simple architecture, and — the part that matters most — a genuine catalog of drop-in motors in different winds, so a meaningful speed or torque change is one component on your existing controller. Here's the honest ladder, cheapest to fastest, split by system where the systems split.

1. Tires — every system, first

Top speed scales with tire diameter: ~18" stock to 20" is roughly 11% (about 1.5–2 mph); 22" roughly 22% (3–4 mph). Past 20", plan on a lift kit. The tradeoff is hill torque — which the motor tier buys back with interest.

2. The motor tier — the TXT's ace

Both major TXT systems take aftermarket motors, and choosing the wind is choosing the cart's new personality:

  • Series carts take series-wound performance motors, and the series architecture has a bonus personality: it responds dramatically to amperage, which makes the motor-plus-controller pairing (next rung) especially rewarding.
  • TXT48 follows the same logic in 48V spec.

3. Controller upgrades

Higher amperage sharpens launch and hill power on any motor. On Series carts this rung is transformative — series motors convert amps to torque with enthusiasm. On PDS, upgraded controllers add both headroom and, on some units, adjustable profiles. EZGO controllers are listed by system.

4. Speed settings (PDS)

PDS carts carry selectable speed profiles from the factory, and fleet carts frequently live their whole lives on the slow one. Having the profile checked and set appropriately — a dealer-tool or handheld-programmer job — is sometimes the cheapest speed on this page. Worth verifying before hardware, after tires.

5. Lithium — the consistency upgrade

Lead-acid sag means a TXT that runs 15 fresh off the charger and 12 an hour later. A lithium conversion holds full voltage nearly to empty, drops 250+ lbs from a light cart, and properly feeds an upgraded motor and controller. 6. The 48V conversion (36V carts) — the ceiling raiser

The biggest single transformation available to a 36V TXT: controller, solenoid, charger, and batteries move to 48V spec together, opening the modern parts catalog and genuinely changing what the cart is. It's a package project, speced from your serial — and if you're already this deep, it's also the moment to choose the motor wind you actually want rather than converting twice.

Brakes and the law: TXT drum brakes were engineered for golf-course pace — budget the brake refresh with any build targeting 20+. And 20–25 mph on public roads generally means LSV territory: lights, mirrors, registration. Build the whole cart, not just the fast half.
