Yamaha G16 vs G19: Tell Them Apart & Fix Common Problems
Applies to the Yamaha G16 and G19, 1996–2002. Serial prefixes: JN6 (G16 gas "Ultima"), JN8 (G16 electric 36V), JR1 (G19 electric 48V). Decode your serial number here.
Here's the trap that makes this page necessary: the G16 electric and the G19 look identical. Same body, same years on the road, same badge placement — but the G16 is a 36V cart and the G19 is 48V, and every battery, charger, controller, solenoid, and conversion kit decision flows from that one difference. Owners order 48V parts for 36V carts (and vice versa) every week of the year.
Which one do you have?
Two ways to know for certain:
- The serial prefix on the frame under the seat: JN8 = G16 electric (36V). JR1 = G19 (48V). JN6 = G16 gas, and the voltage question doesn't apply.
- Count the batteries. A six-battery pack of 6V batteries is the 36V G16. A 48V G19 carries a larger pack — if the plate is unreadable, add up the battery voltages printed on the cases and trust the total.
Do both checks if the cart is new to you. Twenty-five years is plenty of time for a previous owner to have swapped packs, plates, or even bodies — the battery math is the ground truth.
What goes wrong at 25 years old

Upgrade paths: the two carts diverge
G19 (48V): same story as the G22 and Drive — native 48V means modern 48V lithium kits are a realistic drop-in, pending tray fitment. A 48V G19 with lithium is a legitimately capable modern cart wearing a 1990s body.
G16 electric (36V): two roads. Stay 36V and re-battery (or use a 36V lithium option where available), or step up to 48V — which done right is a system decision involving the controller, solenoid, charger, and possibly motor, not just batteries. It's very doable and we spec these regularly, but it's a "talk to us with your serial number first" project, not a cart-side impulse buy.
Parts reality in 2026: electrical, brake, drivetrain, and tune-up parts for the G16/G19 remain in steady supply — this generation sold in huge numbers and the aftermarket still serves it. Body, trim, and some OEM-only pieces are the scarce ones.
