Yamaha Serial Number Decoder: Find Your Model & Year

Last verified July 2026 against Yamaha's official serial number documentation.

A customer emailed us recently: "I have a 2015 Yamaha 48V. No model number, but the first few digits of the VIN are JW9. Will this tow/run switch work?"

Good question — and it comes up constantly, because Yamaha doesn't put a model name anywhere obvious on the cart. Here's the answer to his question and yours: JW9 is a Yamaha Drive (also called the G29), electric, built between 2011 and 2016. The digit right after the dash gives the year — JW9-5xxxxx is a 2015. So yes, a Drive-fitment tow/run switch fits.

First: golf carts don't have VINs

Unless your cart is a street-legal LSV (Low Speed Vehicle), it doesn't have a 17-digit VIN like a car. It has a serial number — a prefix of letters and numbers, a dash, and a production sequence. That's what you'll use to identify the model and order parts. (If you genuinely have a 17-digit VIN, you have an LSV — run it through the free NHTSA VIN decoder.)

Where to find your Yamaha serial number

The location moved around over the years, which is why so many owners can't find it:

• Drive2 (2017–present): sticker on the rear wall of the engine/motor compartment, under the seat. Late 2022 and newer carts also have a second copy on the steering column with a barcode.
• Drive / G29 (2007–2016): 2007–2010 models have it on the passenger side near the seat; 2011-up models moved it under the seat toward the rear of the cart.
• G22 / G-MAX (2003–2007): frame under the seat.
• G14–G19 (1995–2002): under the seat toward the front, on the frame.
• G2 / G9 (1985–1995): under the seat toward the front.
• G1 (1979–1986): on the frame near the driver-side rear tire, viewed from behind the cart.

Decoding the year

For Drive-era carts, the first digit after the dash walks up with the model year. Using the electric Drive (JW9) as the example:

The same pattern applies to JW8 (gas Drive) and, with different starting years, to JW1/JW2 (JW1-0 or JW2-0 = 2007). Older G-series carts encode the year less consistently — if your prefix dates to the 80s or 90s, match the prefix in the table above and use the model-year range, or send us the full serial.

Why the model matters more than the year

Gas and electric versions of the same Yamaha are different machines for parts purposes. A JW8 and a JW9 share a body but nothing under the seat — controllers, solenoids, chargers, tow switches, none of it crosses over. That's exactly why Yamaha gave them separate prefixes. Meanwhile the Drive and Drive2 look similar at a glance but changed enough between 2016 and 2017 that lift kits, enclosures, and most electrical parts are model-specific.

Voltage splits worth knowing: G1 through G16 electric carts are 36V. The G19, G22, and Drive/Drive2 are 48V. That single fact determines which batteries, chargers, and lithium conversion kits fit your cart.
