Yamaha Drive (G29) Won't Move? Tow/Run Switch & Solenoid Fix
Applies to the electric Yamaha Drive / G29, 2007–2016 (serial prefixes JW2 and JW9). Not sure which Yamaha you have? Start with the serial number decoder.
A 48V Drive that won't move is almost always one of seven things, and you can rule most of them out in your driveway with a $20 multimeter. Work this list in order — it's sequenced from most common and cheapest to least common and most expensive, which is the order a shop would check them too.
Before you start: key off, remove jewelry, and don't lay tools across battery terminals — a 48V pack will weld a wrench. If you need to lift the cart, use jack stands, never just a jack.
First, the 30-second checks
- Tow/Run switch is in RUN. It's under the seat near the batteries. In TOW, the controller is disconnected on purpose so you can service the pack or tow the cart. Half the "dead cart" calls we take end here.
- The charger is unplugged. The charge receptacle has an interlock that disables the drivetrain while a cord is plugged in — including a cord plugged into the cart but not the wall.
- The forward/reverse switch is fully engaged. Halfway between F and R is neutral. Cycle it firmly.
Now listen: does the solenoid click?
Turn the key on, select forward, press the pedal, and listen under the seat. That single data point splits the diagnosis in half.
No click — the control circuit isn't waking up

Clicks but doesn't move — power isn't reaching the motor

| Controller | Last resort by elimination | Stock Drive controllers are durable; genuinely dead ones usually follow water intrusion or a battery-work mistake. If you've cleared everything above, this is the remaining suspect — and a good moment to consider an upgrade instead of a straight replacement. |
Moves in one direction but not the other? That's the forward/reverse switch — the contacts wear on the side you use most (forward). Inspect the F/R switch contacts before touching anything else.
