Yamaha G29 Lithium Battery Conversion Guide (48V Drop-In)
Applies to the 48V electric Yamaha Drive / G29 (2007–2016, serial prefixes JW2/JW9). Decode your serial number here first — Drive and Drive2 kits differ in tray fitment.
The G29 is one of the easiest lithium conversions in the industry, for one simple reason: it's already a 48V cart with a straightforward controller and no charging computer to negotiate with. Pull six lead-acid batteries out, set one lithium battery in, connect two cables and a charger, and you're driving. Here's the honest version of the whole decision.
What actually changes
| Six lead-acid batteries | 48V lithium kit | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Roughly 350+ lbs of battery | Commonly 70–130 lbs depending on capacity — the cart feels visibly quicker and lighter on hills |
| Maintenance | Watering, terminal cleaning, equalizing | None |
| Charging | 8–10+ hours, must finish full cycles | Typically 3–5 hours, and partial charges don't hurt it |
| Winter storage | Trickle charging or sulfation damage | Store at partial charge, walk away for the season |
| Voltage under load | Sags — the cart slows on hills as the pack drains | Flat discharge curve — full power until nearly empty |
| Lifespan | 3–6 years typical | 3,000–5,000 cycles — realistically 10+ years of residential use |
The 5- and 10-year math is covered in depth in our lithium vs. lead-acid cost breakdown, but the short version: by the second lead-acid pack replacement, lithium has usually already paid for itself — before counting a single hour not spent watering batteries.
Will it work with the stock G29?
Yes. The stock Drive controller runs a lithium pack without modification — there's no motor-brake system (that's an EZGO RXV issue) and no onboard computer to bypass (that's a Club Car issue). Fitment questions on a G29 come down to three practical items:
- Tray fitment and hold-down: kits designed for the Drive drop into the stock battery compartment; universal kits may need a bracket. This is exactly what we confirm when you send us your serial prefix.
- The charger: lead-acid chargers must not be used on lithium. Every kit we sell ships with a matched lithium charger that plugs into the factory receptacle location.
- The state-of-charge meter: your old battery meter reads voltage, and lithium's flat curve makes voltage meters lie. Kits include a proper gauge — install it; guessing range is the #1 new-lithium-owner complaint.
One habit to build: flip the Tow/Run switch to TOW before disconnecting or connecting any battery, lead-acid or lithium. It protects the controller from the spark of connection and it's the first thing lithium install instructions will tell you.
Choosing capacity
Capacity is range, not speed. Rough residential guidance for a G29:
| Usage | Capacity class | Realistic range |
|---|---|---|
| Neighborhood loops, golf rounds | ~60Ah class | 20–30 miles |
| Daily driver, hills, rear seat | ~105Ah class | 35–50 miles |
| Heavy use, lifted with big tires | 150Ah+ class | 50+ miles |
Lifted carts with oversized tires and rear seats pull more current — size up a class rather than running a small pack at its limits every day.
Why we lead with Bolt Energy kits: they're our house brand, which means we stock them deep, we've installed them, we answer the support calls ourselves — and they carry a 12-year warranty, the strongest we've been able to put behind any battery line we carry. Drop-in fitment for the Drive is confirmed before the box ships.
The install, honestly
A first-timer with hand tools does this in an afternoon; most of the time is removing six heavy lead-acid batteries and cleaning a decade of corrosion out of the tray. The sequence: Tow mode → disconnect and remove old batteries → clean tray → set and secure the lithium battery → main positive and negative connections → mount gauge → mount/connect charger → Run mode → test drive. Full step-by-step install videos for our kits are on the installation videos hub, and the video for your exact kit is embedded on its product page.
