Yamaha G29 Golf Cart Won't Charge: Diagnosis & Fixes

Applies to the 48V electric Yamaha Drive / G29 (2007–2016, serial prefixes JW2/JW9) and largely to the Drive2. Decode your serial number here if you're not sure.

Good news first: Yamaha kept charging simple. Unlike a Club Car, there's no onboard computer standing between the charger and the batteries deciding whether to allow a charge. When a G29 won't charge, it's the charger, the receptacle, the wiring, or — more often than anything — the batteries themselves.

Start with the pack, not the charger

Modern smart chargers refuse to start on a pack that's too far gone. Most need to see something in the neighborhood of 30–40V before they'll wake up and engage. So the most common "broken charger" is actually a dead pack:

  • Measure rested pack voltage across the main positive and negative. Healthy 48V pack: roughly 50–51V. Down in the 30s or low 40s after sitting: the charger may be refusing to engage on purpose.
  • Measure each battery individually. One battery reading several volts below its siblings drags the whole pack down and can stall a charge cycle partway. One bad battery in a six-battery pack is the classic G29 charging complaint.
  • Check the water. Plates exposed above the electrolyte line are permanently damaging themselves every day they sit that way.

Pack too dead for the charger to recognize? Charge each battery individually with a 6V or 12V automotive charger (match your battery voltage) until the pack total is high enough for the cart charger to take over. Then work the connection path

Wall outlet Plug in a lamp or phone charger Garages lose GFCI outlets to trips constantly. Reset the GFCI before diagnosing anything on the cart.
Charge receptacle on the cart Inspect the pins for heat damage, melting, or green corrosion; wiggle-test with the plug seated The receptacle is a wear item. Arcing from a loose plug burns the contacts, and a burned receptacle both blocks charging and disables the drivetrain interlock. Replacement is cheap and straightforward.
DC cord and plug Inspect the charger's plug end the same way Receptacle damage and plug damage usually come as a pair — replace both or the new part inherits the old arcing.
Charger fuse Check the fuse on or in the charger body A blown charger fuse often means a reversed connection or a shorted battery happened somewhere — find out why before replacing it.
Charger output With the charger on and connected, measure DC voltage at the plug (or listen: a working charger hums, and an ammeter-equipped one shows needle movement) No output with good AC in = the charger itself. Stock units can be repaired, but a modern replacement charger usually costs less than the repair.

Charging starts, then stops early

A charge that quits after a few minutes points at a weak battery pulling pack voltage out of the charger's expected curve, or heat shutdown in the charger. A charge that runs forever without finishing points at sulfated batteries that can no longer reach full voltage — the charger keeps waiting for a finish line the pack can't cross. Both patterns are pack symptoms, not charger symptoms.

Replacement options

If you're replacing both the charger and the batteries, stop — that's the exact price territory where a lithium conversion kit (battery, charger, and gauge in one box, with a fraction of the weight) starts making more sense than rebuilding the lead-acid system twice a decade.
