How to Make a Yamaha G29 Faster: What Actually Works
Applies to the 48V electric Yamaha Drive / G29 (2007–2016); the same logic applies to the electric Drive2. Decode your serial number here.
A stock electric Drive tops out around 19 mph, and there's no hidden dealer magnet or one-wire trick that changes that — the ceiling is set by gearing, tire diameter, and what the stock controller and motor can spin. Which means every real speed gain comes from changing one of those three things. Here they are, cheapest to fastest.
1. Taller tires — the cheap few mph
Top speed scales directly with tire diameter. Stock G29 tires are roughly 18" tall; stepping to 20" is about 11% more speed (roughly 2 mph), 22" about 22% (roughly 4 mph), and 23" more still. Two catches:
- Anything past ~20" generally wants a lift kit for clearance on a Drive.
- Taller tires trade torque for speed. On flat ground a healthy stock cart handles 22s fine; add hills, passengers, or a tired battery pack and it will feel the loss on every climb.
2. Fix the sag — lithium as a speed part
Lead-acid voltage sags under load, and sag is speed you paid for and aren't getting. A cart that runs 19 mph fresh off the charger and 15 mph an hour later isn't slow — its pack is. A lithium conversion holds nearly full voltage across the whole discharge, so the cart runs its best speed all day, sheds ~250+ lbs of battery weight, and gives any future controller upgrade a pack that can actually feed it. It won't raise the 19 mph ceiling by itself, but it makes the cart live at the ceiling.
3. Controller and motor — raising the ceiling

The order matters. The efficient build sequence is: batteries in shape (or lithium) → tires/lift for the look and 2–4 mph → AC kit if you want the real jump. Buying a big controller to push a sagging lead-acid pack through stock gearing is the most common wasted money in cart upgrades.
Before you build a 25 mph cart
Stock drum brakes, seat belts, and suspension were engineered for 19 mph. Past that, budget for a brake upgrade, and know your local rules — 20–25 mph on public roads generally puts you in LSV territory with lighting, mirror, and registration requirements.
