How to Choose the Right Lithium Battery for Your Golf Cart (2026 Guide)

How to Choose the Right Lithium Battery for Your Golf Cart (2026 Guide)

Lithium is the single best upgrade you can make to a golf cart in 2026: roughly a quarter of the weight of lead-acid, zero maintenance, faster charging, and steady power from full charge to empty. But between voltages, amp-hours, and brands, picking the right kit can feel like homework. This guide walks through the three decisions that matter — in the order you should make them.

Short on time? Ask Lithium Larry — our 60-second battery finder matches your exact cart to an in-stock kit — or call us at (636) 355-8787, Mon–Fri 9–5 Central.

Step 1: Match Your Cart's Voltage

Unless you're doing a full performance build, choose the same voltage your cart runs today:

  • 36V — older EZGO TXT/Marathon, older Club Car DS, Yamaha G1–G16
  • 48V — most modern carts: Club Car Precedent/Onward/Tempo, EZGO RXV and 48V TXT, Yamaha Drive/Drive2, ICON, and most newer builds
  • 72V — high-performance and some newer luxury carts

One thing that confuses nearly everyone: lithium batteries for 48V carts are labeled 51.2V. That's not a mismatch — 51.2V is simply the natural resting voltage of lithium (LiFePO4) chemistry built for 48V systems. It's a direct drop-in replacement. Same logic applies to 38.4V batteries for 36V carts and 70–76V batteries for 72V systems.

And a myth worth killing: higher voltage alone doesn't make your cart faster. Speed comes from the motor and controller. Jumping from 48V to 72V without upgrading those components buys you complexity, not MPH.

Step 2: Pick Your Amp-Hours (Range)

Amp-hours (Ah) determine how far you go on a charge. Manufacturer range estimates for a typical two-passenger cart on flat terrain:

  • 60Ah — roughly 15–25 miles. Neighborhood cruising and course play; the value pick and equivalent to a fresh set of lead-acid, at a fraction of the weight.
  • 105Ah — roughly 30–45 miles. The most popular size by far: all-day range for larger communities, hills, and carts with lifts or bigger tires.
  • 150–160Ah+ — roughly 50–70 miles. Hunting properties, farms, heavy accessory loads, and full-day heavy use.

Hills, headwinds, extra passengers, and speeds over 25 MPH all reduce range, so if you're between sizes, size up — the price difference is smaller than the frustration of a cart that quits two miles from home.

Step 3: Choose Your Brand

We install and support every brand we sell, and each earns its place for a different kind of owner:

  • Bolt Energy USA — our flagship line. Purpose-built for golf carts with a 12-year manufacturer warranty, and every kit ships complete: battery, waterproof charger, state-of-charge meter, Bluetooth monitoring, and model-specific mounting brackets. The Professional kits add heavy-gauge cables, a new solenoid, and a 50-amp voltage reducer for carts running lights and accessories — a true everything-in-one-box conversion.
  • Eco Battery — Gen 3 packs with a limited lifetime warranty, plug-and-play harnesses, and the deepest fitment catalog in the industry — if you drive something unusual (ICON, Advanced EV, Bintelli, Moke, Denago), Eco probably makes an exact-fit bundle for it. We sell Eco at manufacturer-direct pricing.
  • Lithium Rhino — high-output conversion kits with an 8-year warranty and serious value per amp-hour. A favorite for lifted carts, oversized tires, and torque-hungry riders, topping out at the 170Ah "Godzilla" pack.
  • MODZ — universal-fit bundles with a limited lifetime warranty, including built-in battery heaters — the pick for northern owners who store or drive in freezing temps.

How Hard Is the Install?

Most lithium kits are genuine drop-in replacements, and most of our customers finish in an afternoon with basic hand tools:

  1. Disconnect and remove the old lead-acid batteries, cables, and hold-downs
  2. Bolt in the included mounting brackets
  3. Set the lithium pack and connect the main positive and negative
  4. Install the charge port and state-of-charge meter
  5. Charge fully, and update controller settings if your kit calls for it

Don't take our word for it — watch the full step-by-step install video for your exact cart before you buy. We host complete guides for Club Car, EZGO, Yamaha, ICON, and more.

The Bottom Line

Match your voltage, size your amp-hours to how far you actually drive (then round up), and pick the brand that fits your priorities — Bolt Energy for the complete flagship kit and 12-year coverage, Eco Battery for lifetime warranty and rare fitments, Lithium Rhino for performance value, MODZ for cold climates.
